Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP
Bradley Arant Boult Cummings is offering our Annual Diversity Scholarship. Bradley Arant Boult Cummings will award two scholarships a year to two deserving students. A $10,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student in his or her second year of law school, and a $5000 scholarship wil be awarded to a student in his or her first year of law school. In connection with receiving the scholarship, recipients will be required to clerk in one of our seven offices for at least six weeks of the summer after the scholarship is awarded. We are currently accepting applications for first year law students and ANY students interested in our summer program and our diversity scholarship should contact Mary Screws, Director of Recruiting, at mscrews@babc.com or by phone at (205) 521-8445. The deadline for applying for the scholarship is February 15, 2011.

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings is a full service, regional law firm with more than 370 attorneys and seven offices strategically located in AL, MS, NC, TN, and DC. We are one of the largest law firms in the Southeast and represent a wide variety of local, regional, national, and international clients with nationally recognized practices in health care, commercial real estate, construction, finance, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate securities, among others. Our firm received the fourth highest number of top-tier rankings in the country in the inaugural U.S. firms and 144 of the firm's attorneys have also been named to the 2011 edition of Best Lawyers.

Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal, L.L.P.
We are a Dallas law firm with nationally prominent litigation and corporate reorganization practices. We also have well-known corporate governance, employment, and real estate practices, to name a few. But practice areas don’t define us; our clients do. In Dallas, there is an imposing bigger-than-life statue of a Texas Ranger. It reads: “One riot, one ranger.” That’s the spirit in which we approach every matter. Our clients benefit from the results we deliver – not the number of attorneys we assign.

We emphasize realistic associate-level assignments, and summer associates are treated as part of the legal team on a given matter so that they can make a realistic appraisal of the challenges and opportunities offered by the practice of law at our Firm. Summer associates work on a wide variety of active matters and can choose to work on projects in either the transactional or litigation practice areas or both. They also participate in related activities such as hearings and other court appearances, depositions, client meetings, and closings. Each summer associate works with a variety of partners and associates, including one partner who acts as a mentor to help train the summer associate and ensure that the summer associate is receiving meaningful, timely feedback on work projects. We also encourage our lawyers to get to know each and every summer associate, and vice versa, so our social functions are generally smaller, casual events geared to the individual interests of our summer associates.

If you would like to apply for a summer associate or associate position with Carrington Coleman, please send your resume to Andrea Glover, our Recruiting Administrator, at the following address:

IMPORTANT: Health Advisory from State Department

Due to a drop in water pressure last night, the State Department of Health and Hospitals and the Sewerage and Water Board have released a precautionary boil water advisory for the entire east bank of the New Orleans.

Citizens are urged to boil their tap water vigorously for at least one full minute prior to using it for drinking or cooking (the minute starts when the water begins to bubble). This includes water used for brushing teeth, making ice, washing raw foods, preparation of drinks, and water for pets. Wait for the water to cool before using it, or store it in the refrigerator in a clean container. You should throw away ice made during the time the advisory or notice was issued, as freezing does not kill bacteria.

This boil water advisory will remain in effect until further notice.

What are you thankful for?

BLSA is thankful for the community we have at Tulane. In the spirit of the community, we hope you will join us for Thanksgiving today at 1pm in the MPR.

Bring your favorite dish, but we'll forgive you if you forgot to make it.

This is our last event for the semester, so be sure to come out!

A Message from the NBLSA Executive Office

Dear NBLSA Family,
On Tuesday, November 2, 2010, we have an incredible opportunity to participate in our democratic process. I write on the eve of our midterm elections to encourage you to vote and to share this reminder with others.
Why vote? Because each of us has an issue we are passionate about such as education, the environment, civil rights, the economy, and healthcare. No matter what your focus is, legislation plays an important role. Your vote tomorrow will help determine not only the election, but also the future of your cause and our nation.
Why vote? Because we are law students and future attorneys. Our active advocacy on behalf of others rings hollow if we are unwilling to add our voices to America’s marketplace of ideas. Your vote will contribute to the direction of our great democracy.
Why vote? Because voting is a meaningful expression of American citizenship for which Blacks have historically fought. We have an obligation to continue to exercise this everyday freedom for which so many have sacrificed their lives. Your vote will honor the legacy of their struggle for empowerment.
For these reasons, voter education and election protection remain core NBLSA initiatives. Even today, situations may arise, intentionally or inadvertently, that work to disenfranchise us as well as our neighbors, family, and friends. Equal access to the ballot is not accomplished without constant vigilance. We have partnered with theElection Protection Coalition to ensure all voters have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process. If you experience or become aware of a problem at the polls, please contact the Election Protection Coalition at 1-866-OUR VOTE. You may also notify NBLSA by contacting us at vote@nblsa.org.
I hope you will join me in exercising our right to vote by casting a ballot tomorrow.
All the best,

Calling All Alumni: We Need Your Feedback!

Tulane BLSA is excited to invite you as alumni to become involved with our chapter.

This year, we have established five overarching priorities for our chapter as we plan events and provide resources for our membership: identification, connection, solidarity, communication, and involvement. Key among these priorities is establishing a greater connection with our alumni, especially those in the Greater New Orleans area. We recognize the importance of learning from those who came before us, and therefore, we would like to increase our connection with you.

Last week's Bankruptcy Panel was truly an unforgettable experience. SRBLSA's Regional Job Fair begins on January 14, 2011 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Tulane BLSA is hoping to help subsidize costs for members interested in attending. Any interested member should let us know as soon as possible-- send a quick e-mail to TulaneBLSA@gmail.com.

Mark Your Calendar: Kim Boyle on October 25

Join us on October 25 as Tulane BLSA teams with Law Women to welcome Kim Boyle, a partner at Phelps Dunbar here in New Orleans. Attorney Boyle has the distinction of serving the first female African-American President of the Louisiana State Bar Association in 2009-2010. On October 25, she will join us as part of a discussion on women and minorities in the field. We look forward to this event, as it promises to foster some excellent ideas and perspectives for legal professionals of both genders and all backgrounds.

TOMORROW: Judicial Panel-- Get the Power Point!

We hope to see you all tomorrow night at the Bankruptcy Panel & Reception. It promises to be an excellent networking opportunity, and a great chance to learn from established practitioners from across the country. You can also download the PowerPoint before the panel, as it is an essential accompaniment to tomorrow's presentation.

Below is Dean Meyer's personal invitation to the event:

"Dear Students,

I wanted to draw your attention to a special event taking place tomorrow. In connection with the annual meeting of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) in downtown New Orleans this week, the Law School will co-host an informational and networking event about the practice of bankruptcy law. An impressive group of bankruptcy judges and top bankruptcy lawyers from across the country, including our own Professor Adam Feibelman, will come to the Law School tomorrow afternoon to present an introduction to bankruptcy practice to law students.

Bankruptcy law offers opportunities for challenging, highly sophisticated practice throughout the country, and job opportunities in the field are growing. The goal of this event is to ensure that law students (and even some interested pre-law students) understand the nature of the practice and the opportunities available there. Students who attend the panel presentation, from 4:00-5:00 p.m., will be invited to attend a reception afterward in the Multi-Purpose Room, where they will have a chance to interact with as many as 15 or 20 bankruptcy judges and many more top-flights lawyers in an extraordinary networking opportunity. (Needless to say, students must attend the panel presentation to be admitted to the reception.)

Please join me tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in Room 110. An invitation is attached.

Best wishes,

David Meyer
