Calling All Alumni: We Need Your Feedback!

Tulane BLSA is excited to invite you as alumni to become involved with our chapter.

This year, we have established five overarching priorities for our chapter as we plan events and provide resources for our membership: identification, connection, solidarity, communication, and involvement. Key among these priorities is establishing a greater connection with our alumni, especially those in the Greater New Orleans area. We recognize the importance of learning from those who came before us, and therefore, we would like to increase our connection with you.

Last week's Bankruptcy Panel was truly an unforgettable experience. TOMORROW: Judicial Panel-- Get the Power Point!

We hope to see you all tomorrow night at the Bankruptcy Panel & Reception. It promises to be an excellent networking opportunity, and a great chance to learn from established practitioners from across the country. You can also download the PowerPoint before the panel, as it is an essential accompaniment to tomorrow's presentation.

Below is Dean Meyer's personal invitation to the event:

"Dear Students,

I wanted to draw your attention to a special event taking place tomorrow. In connection with the annual meeting of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) in downtown New Orleans this week, the Law School will co-host an informational and networking event about the practice of bankruptcy law. An impressive group of bankruptcy judges and top bankruptcy lawyers from across the country, including our own Professor Adam Feibelman, will come to the Law School tomorrow afternoon to present an introduction to bankruptcy practice to law students.

Bankruptcy law offers opportunities for challenging, highly sophisticated practice throughout the country, and job opportunities in the field are growing. The goal of this event is to ensure that law students (and even some interested pre-law students) understand the nature of the practice and the opportunities available there. Students who attend the panel presentation, from 4:00-5:00 p.m., will be invited to attend a reception afterward in the Multi-Purpose Room, where they will have a chance to interact with as many as 15 or 20 bankruptcy judges and many more top-flights lawyers in an extraordinary networking opportunity. (Needless to say, students must attend the panel presentation to be admitted to the reception.)

Please join me tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. in Room 110. An invitation is attached.

Best wishes,

David Meyer

This Week in LAWBA
"Fireside" Chat with Judge Herbert A. Cade
LABWA members joined Judge Herbert A. Cade for LABWA's first Fireside Chat with the Court on Thursday. As a brown bag lunch program designed to give LABWA members unfiltered access to the judiciary, Judge Cade shared his wisdom and insight on the challenges facing the African American community generally, and his experience as a member of the judiciary. Judge Cade offered "war stories" about cases where his rulings were overturned by the Fourth Circuit, and also enlightened us about the progress in the New Orleans judiciary from his days of practice to his days now serving on the bench. Judge Cade challenged LABWA to address many of the problems plaguing our communities and children, so let us all consider how we can answer his call. The next Fireside Chat will be December 30, 2010, as these events only occur on the 5th Thursdays of the month and are designed to give members who are unable to attend the regularly scheduled meetings an opportunity to receive an update on LABWA's business and all members a chance to interact with the judiciary.
LABWA Mentor-Mentee "RAIN GARDEN"
LABWA will join RY Girls and the Young Professional Engineers of the Water Environment Federation (WEF), a not-for-profit technical and educational organization, to construct a "rain-garden" in the Ninth Ward, on October 2, 2010 from 9:00am until 2:00pm. Young engineers will explain technology of the rain-garden - a bioswale designed to remove silt and pollutants from rainfall runoff before it reaches surface waters. This exercise is aimed at building respect for and making a positive impact on the environment. Mayor Landrieu will make the welcome address for this event, the community service component of the WEF convention, in New Orleans this week!

Volunteer with Urban League College Track's Mock Trial Class!
The Urban League College Track Program, in partnership with the New Orleans Kids Partnership, is seeking law students, lawyers or professionals in the legal field this fall! Develop important skills while engaging students in a fun mock case!
What is Urban League College Track?

Urban League College Track supports motivated students to succeed in high school and graduate from college. This is done by setting high expectations and providing rigorous academic preparation, opportunities for leadership development and enrichment, and guidance through the college application and selection processes through our three core services areas: Academic Affairs, Student Life, and College Affairs.
This fall semester, 15-20 high school students will participate in a mock trial class once a week. We need law students or professionals to help us facilitate the mock trial class. Facilitators may choose what day of the week (M-F) and time (4:45-5:45 PM or 5:50-6:50 PM) works best for them. Trials and curriculum will be provided. For more information, please contact Lauren Pigeon at Lpigeon@collegetrack.org or at (504) 920-8484.
