Last week, 2-year-old Jeremy Galmon was shot and killed after being caught in the crossfire of a senseless shooting. Although NOPD does have two suspects in custody, his family still faces a long journey of grief and recovery ahead. If you would like to contribute to the Jeremy Galmon Beneficiary Fund, you may do so at Liberty Bank & Trust branches in New Orleans or Baton Rouge, or by calling 504.240.5288.

Eat•Pay•Love: the BLSA bake sale

Reminder: the semi-annual bake sale is happening all this week from 11am-1pm. Members and non-members are all encouraged to come out and support the chapter-- buy a sweet treat, or a t-shirt!

From Law Women: Lily Ledbetter at TLS

Lilly Ledbetter at Tulane Law, October 6th, 12 noon - 2:30 pm, reception to follow.

Although Lilly Ledbetter began working for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in 1979, she did not find out until many years later that she was paid less than her male counterparts her entire career because the company forbade employees from sharing salary information. A jury found that Goodyear had discriminated and awarded substantial back pay, but the Supreme Court held, in a 5-4 decision, that the law required her to challenge discriminatory practices within 180 days and denied her compensation. The first law President Obama signed into law was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, allowing plaintiffs to recover for continuing discrimination, but almost no progress has been made in closing the wage gap between men and women in the last 30 years.
Come hear Lilly Ledbetter’s story, and find out how to make equal pay a reality.
Ms. Ledbetter requested specifically to address the student body at Tulane Law.
This talk is separate from a University-wide event later in the day.
Thank you,
Tulane Law Women

UPDATED: Networking Opportunity: Bankruptcy Law Panel Discussion

Panel discussion: Current Trends in the Practice of Bankruptcy Law
Wednesday, October 13
4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Tulane University Law School
Room 110, John Giffen Weinmann Hall

From October 13-16, 2010, New Orleans will be the site of the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges (NCBJ) annual meeting.

The NCBJ includes in its membership nearly all of the federal bankruptcy judges in the United States. The NCBJ's annual meeting is the premier gathering of attorneys, academics, judges, investment bankers and turnaround managers along with a variety of other restructuring professionals.

Some of the over 2000 professionals attending this meeting have participated in many of the largest and most sophisticated bankruptcy cases filed in the U.S. and globally.

There are also some lawyers who handle the variety of consumer cases that work their way through the bankruptcy system and often present interesting issues for the U.S. Supreme Court to decide each term.

On Wednesday, October 13, from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., at Tulane University Law School, several of the attorneys and federal judges at the NCBJ convention have agreed to participate in a bankruptcy law forum. A reception hosted by the NCBJ-NBA Liaison Committee will follow this timely and interesting panel discussion.

WHO IS INVITED?

Students from any of the undergraduate colleges in New Orleans, including the City's vaunted HBCUs, and law students from the region's exceptional law schools who are interested in business law, restructuring, insolvency, bankruptcy, or corporate or consumer debt solutions are welcome.

We have enlisted several prominent lawyers from some of the nation's premier law firms, most of whom also happen to be African-American, to lead the discussion. If you have only the slightest interest in becoming an attorney, or if you are already in law school and you are unsure of which area of law you wish to practice in, you should come to this program.

WHEN IS THE EVENT?

We are holding this panel discussion, entitled "Current Trends in The Practice of Bankruptcy Law," on Wednesday, October 13, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

WHERE?

Room 110, John Giffen Weinmann Hall (6329 Freret Street, New Orleans), Tulane University Law School.

WILL THERE BE FOOD AND TIME TO MEET THE PANELISTS?

Yes. Immediately following the presentation, the NCBJ is sponsoring a reception at Tulane law school. Students will be afforded the rare opportunity to speak one on one with these highly-skilled professionals about a potential career in the law or any of the many facets of bankruptcy or restructuring law.

RSVP

Capacity is limited. In order to sufficiently plan for this event, please send your RSVP toAngela_Gray@ohsb.uscourts.gov or call her at (513) 684-2572 x. 160 prior to October 4.

By Tuesday the 14th, please e-mail Drea if you are thinking about participating.
  • · Frederick Douglass Moot Court. Tulane BLSA will again send at least one team to the Frederick Douglas Moot Court Competition; interested members should also make plans to be at Wednesday’s interest meeting.

  • · Blog. As always, we are reminding members to make the BLSA blog a part of their regularly scheduled activities.
  • · Call for Outlines. Upperclassmen are encouraged to continue submitting any outlines they may have from previous classes (preferably those classes in which you received a B or higher). Contact an officer to submit them, or e-mail them to TulaneBLSA@gmail.com . All students may potentially benefit from you taking a moment to send them our way, and 1L’s may especially benefit as we prepare for our “Outline Buffet” 1L seminar (details forthcoming).
  • · Membership Survey . It’s always helpful to know what fellow members are involved in, and to share tidbits of wisdom with each other. To that end, we’re reminding members to respond to the membership survey as soon as possible. Your responses will help us compile a more effective member directory that is comprehensive of our interests, activities, and specialty areas.
  • · Event Previews: Mark your calendars for these upcoming BLSA activities:
o September 15. Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial/ Frederick Douglass Moot Court Interest Meeting
o September 24. OMA (Office of Multicultural Affairs) reception for graduate students
o September 24. Tulane/Loyola/SRBLSA collaboration
o September 25. 1L seminar series

Friday’s event was a great success, and we hope to host more opportunities to connect with big & lil sibs in the future, but these matches may prove to be invaluable resources and support for you in your legal career, so we encourage members to take advantage of that relationship now.

South Carolina Firm Seeks Applicants.

Established in 1980, Ellis, Lawhorne & Sims, P.A. is located in Columbia, SC and is considered one of South Carolina's premier full-service law firms. We provide legal services to local and regional clients and serve as local counsel to numerous national companies. The firm is structured around four practice areas, recognizing that situations - and clients - do not always fit neatly into each category. In such cases, our multi-faceted expertise and genial culture are leveraged so clients enjoy the convenience and expediency of a relationship with a single firm, yet benefit from the strengths of many attorneys practicing diverse, yet complementary, areas of law.

We are interested in identifying qualified candidates who would consider making Columbia, SC their home.

Our firm hopes to hear from law students who are interested in both our Summer Associate program and Associate Attorney positions that may be available at the firm.

Please visit
www.ellislawhorne.com or call Shelley Montague at 803.254.4190 for more information.
